Taking on a design project that honors cultural significance of a historical icon is a bold venture. Working through every detail of that design to ensure that it can be packed up, shipped across the world and reopened nine more times over six years is even bolder.
That’s what we did for “King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh,” a traveling exhibition of more than 150 authentic artifacts that celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the legendary tomb’s discovery.
The attention to detail is apparent from the very beginning of the retail area, where visitors experience a natural transition from the exhibit though the use of custom, hand-painted faux stone columns and intricate hieroglyphic wall treatments.
Custom-finished display systems and authentic lighting fixtures procured from Egypt and retrofitted for commercial use round out the rest of the environment so that the eclectic merchandise mix can be displayed flexibly.
One of our top priorities was ensuring that the retail area felt like a natural extension of a visitor’s journey through the antiquities. In addition, the design had to be supremely respectful of Egyptian culture and the significance of King Tut in the country’s history. After spending hours researching Egyptian designs and fixtures present during the Tut era, we chose a mix of high-end elegance and authentic old-world accents that ensured a seamless flow from the exhibit to the retail space.
Our engineering partners stayed closely involved during the concepting process to make sure that the overall vision for the space was just as durable and “shippable” as it was whimsical and inspirational. Following the custom manufacture and finishing, every inch of the store was shipped to the California Science Center by air freight for initial setup and install.
We were impressed by the research Brian and his team conducted to create a seamless experience for visitors. Their attention to detail and commitment to authenticity made them ideal partners.
