The Back Story

Cheflavor is a gourmet food store dedicated to supplying great tasting provisions for amateur and professional chefs alike.

After spending years working in nearly every aspect of the restaurant business, husband and wife team Matt & Tahne Green wanted to create a specialty store for  consumers who shared their obsession for layers of flavor and demands for high quality ingredients.

Retail Habitats was selected to help bring this concept to life with a top-to-bottom design of the fledgling brand, thus ensuring a visual and experiential platform that could excite and connect with the budding local gourmet community of Temecula, CA.

Creating A New Brand

After conducting an in-depth discovery process, it quickly became apparent that a primary focus of the  Cheflavor brand was to curate a “farm to table” product portfolio sourced from local growers, brewers and wineries whenever possible. To that end, imagery suggestive of the connection between nature and the food we consume was paired with warm earth tones to create a striking, emblematic logo.

Once this all-important visual element was finalized, supporting collateral including signage, business cards, shelf talkers and packaging was created with the same rustic, “hand made” feel..

Interior Concept

Location proved to be a major influence on the overall interior design of the space as Cheflavor was able to lease a vintage building in a brand new historic development perfectly tailored to drawing families & foodies to events like farmers markets and concerts.

In order to take advantage of the unique design elements inherent to the “old timey” surroundings, the original floor of the building was preserved and existing “built-ins” were converted to product displays. This rustic esthetic was reinforced by a brand new custom shelving system constructed of steel and reclaimed wood, and various “industrial” display tables & carts were selected to provide a striking backdrop for the unique product mix.

Finally, some “edginess” was added to the design through a wood-burned quote on the wall behind cash wrap as well as a large format graphic featuring a chef with full sleeve tattoos.

Custom Fabrication & Installation

After handling the TI architectural duties & associated permitting process, Retail Habitats drew upon their network of regional artisans and mill shops to coordinate the fabrication & delivery of all custom fixturization. Cheflavor opened their doors in November of 2016 and has already garnered rave reviews from locals and tourists alike as they continue to build the equity of their brand and plan for future expansion.

A Class Act

In 2017, Cheflavor’s Interior Design was honored by the Retail Design Institute as a “Class of 2016” Winner in the “Specialty Food, Gourmet Grocer & Delicatessen” category.

The competition is open to Design Firms & In-House Retail Design Teams from around the globe and celebrates excellence and innovation within the Retail Design Industry. Retail Habitats was thrilled to be included in what ended up being an amazing field of winners, but it made the recognition even sweeter that they were able to “share the love” with some truly exceptional Clients!
