BREWING & SPIRITS

The Back Story
Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits was founded by a small group of home brewers 1996 and has grown to become one of the most prominent players in the intensely competitive San Diego Craft Beer industry, an achievement underscored by their $1 Billion buy out by Constellation Brands in late 2015.
About a year prior to this landmark acquisition, Ballast Point had already broken ground on their new 107,000 sq. ft. headquarters in an attempt to consolidate their multiple brewing operations and corporate offices under one roof. Central to the build out was the addition of a sprawling tasting room, restaurant, beer garden and retail store. That last element, unfortunately, was out of their current architect’s area of expertise, so the hunt was on for a firm that could assist with the design, manufacturing and installation of a branded environment worthy of the new location.
Retail Habitats was ultimately selected to create the new retail space and couldn’t have been more enthusiastic about partnering with one of their favorite local breweries. Already fans of several of their beers, they even worked a celebratory case of Sculpin IPA into their design fee!
Design & Build
Keeping in step with the theming of the rest of the customer-facing areas while still adding a unique personality to the space, Retail Habitats’ design team used Ballast Point’s nautical branding as a guide for the overall look and feel of the retail environment. The challenge of providing a filling area for take-home “growlers” of beer alongside a traditional gift shop was handled using savvy space planning, and “creative concealments” were brought to bear such as specifying a submarine door to mask the access point for a “cold box” of six packs and 24 oz. bottles.
Upon design approval, Retail Habitats’ team of custom fabricators went to work on creating a series custom displays including merchandisable lockers, a cash wrap and a display case, all of which were installed in concert with Ballast Point’s existing construction team. The final product was a gift shop worthy of the flagship location that complimented the rest of the elements in the headquarters.
A Continued Relationship
Following the successful opening of the new headquarters, Retail Habitats was asked to focus their design expertise on Ballast Point’s original location, Home Brew Mart. A staple of San Diegan home brewers for many years, the layout and design of the space was long overdue for an update, and drawing on the visual esthetic created for the company store, Retail Habitats developed a new design that brought the 2000 sq. ft. of interior space into the modern era.
Additionally, a brand new tasting room was designed to better serve Ballast Point’s ever growing legion of fans. Drawing on bold graphics and a continued use of nautical elements, the 40 tap bar was immediately well received after its opening in the spring of 2015 and continues to showcase some of the best suds in San Diego.
